Golden milk is an ayurvedic drink used for thousands of years to promote health and vitality. If you suffer from inflammation, like painful arthritis, allergies, digestive troubles, skin irritations or any of the many diseases caused by inflammation, golden milk might be just what the doctor ordered. A natural alternative with dramatically less side effects than prescription drugs, golden milk harnesses the power of turmeric to reduce inflammation and boost immunity. Research has shown repeatedly that curcumin (the main active ingredient in turmeric), has powerful anti-inflammatory effects, is a very strong antioxidant, and aids in fighting heart disease, Alzheimer’s and even depression. If this isn't enough to make you want to try it, it's also a delicious spice that can be easily added to many household dishes.
Here's what you need:
1 teaspoon turmeric (start with one teaspoon; you can add more depending upon your tastes)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or crushed cinnamon bark
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
5 peppercorns - this aids in the absorption of curcumin
1/2 inch freshly minced ginger (I often skip this when I want to make it quickly)
1 teaspoon Honey (sweetened to taste)
1 cup unsweetened milk (almond, soy, coconut - whatever floats your boat)
Warm the milk, add ingredients and whisk. Bring to a boil and allow the mixture to simmer on low for 5 minutes. Pour into your favourite mug and Enjoy!
*If you want to reduce prep time, premix the dry spices in a jar OR, cook up a larger batch and keep refrigerated for up to five days. Understand that this has a cumulative effect; you'll benefit most from drinking it regularly. And as like most things, it takes time and consistency. I like to make mine before bed as a soothing drink that helps me relax & unwind as I prepare for sleep.
